Description
Dutasteride is mainly used to treat benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH)—an enlarged prostate in men. It helps to:
- Reduce prostate size
- Improve urine flow
- Reduce frequent or difficult urination
- Lower the risk of acute urinary retention
- Reduce the likelihood of prostate-related surgery
It works by blocking the conversion of testosterone into dihydrotestosterone (DHT), a hormone that contributes to prostate enlargement.
Dutasteride is also used for male-pattern hair loss in some countries, but this use is not universally approved.
